International Day of Happiness

Now, people are recognizing that growing the economy is not enough for increasing human’s life quality, we also need happiness. “International Day of Happiness” was first celebrated in 2013 to focus on this “fundamental human goal” after the first ever UN conference on Happiness in 2012. This campaign is a global celebration, which all 193 United Nation member states have participated in. After years of happiness research, one thing has proved fundamental – the importance of our connections with other people. “Your happiness is part of something bigger”.

Do you know in Vietnam, there is a road called “Happiness Road” (Duong Hanh Phuc – In Vietnamese). This road has 184 km length, from Ha Giang Province to the four mountainous districts of Quan Ba, Yen Minh, Dong Van and Meo Vac. The volunteers came from the northern provinces of Cao Bang, Bac Kan, Lang Son, Thai Nguyen, Tuyen Quang, Ha Giang, Hai Duong and Nam Dinh to build “Happiness Road” in 1959. After six hard working years, with many bloods and tears, the road has finally finished. On exactly the same “International Day of Happiness”, March 20th 2015, a ceremony was held in the northern province Ha Giang to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the “Happiness Road” (1965-2015).

The “Happiness Road”, named by President Ho Chi Minh, has a S-shaped along the mountains. From away, the road looks like a silky scarf, embraces the green forests and high rocky mountains. The “Happiness Road” leads to many beautiful places in Ha Giang Province: Dong Van Karst Plateau - recognized by UNESCO as a global geological park in 2010, the Vuong Family Mansion - a house used during the shooting of award-winning movie Chuyen Cua Pao (Pao's Story), Lung Cu Flagpole and Dong Van ancient street.
